Weaving a Family Legacy: The Story Behind Wash+Dry
For nearly 60 years, a family-run business in LaGrange, Georgia, has been crafting rugs built to last. What began in 1967 as a father-son operation focused on commercial-grade durability has grown into a global leader in floor mat manufacturing, spanning across eight countries, and continues through the next generation.
Bruce K. Howard, C.E.O., and his sister Jocelyn “Jocie” Howard Scott, President, Kleen-Tex USA, grew up watching their father and grandfather dedicate themselves to making products that stand the test of time. “This business was built on hard work and attention to detail,” said Bruce. “That foundation hasn’t changed.”
Jocie reflects on how that dedication continues. “When someone buys a Wash+Dry rug, they’re not just getting something for their home. They’re supporting a family business that has spent decades perfecting its craft.”
Founding Kleen-Tex in 1967, R.W. “Frog” Howard, Sr. and his son, Ralph W. Howard, Jr., set out to revolutionize the floor mat industry with commercial-grade mats designed to withstand industrial laundering. What started with industrial mats has expanded into stylish Wash+Dry rugs that can be machine washed and dried at home. "My dad always said he wanted to make it a household name," Jocie noted. "That was his vision even then – creating mats for the home."
Expanding beyond its commercial roots, the Wash+Dry brand brings the same level of craftsmanship and durability to homes with its collection of thoughtfully designed washable rugs for everyday living. Built for the entire home, from entryways that see constant foot traffic to kitchens where spills are inevitable, to living and dining rooms, and bedrooms and bathrooms. Their one-piece, rubber backing and low-profile design stays put under doors, while their washability makes them ideal for households with pets, kids, or allergy sufferers.
"It’s more than just a mat under your feet," Jocie explained. "Wash+Dry is about creating something beautiful that makes everyday life easier." Wash+Dry has a wide collection of rugs with everything from bold patterns to timeless neutrals. There’s a Wash+Dry rug for everyone, complementing a variety of interior designs, including traditional, modern, industrial, farmhouse, coastal, boho, minimalist, and mid-century modern aesthetics.
A Legacy That Lives On
Today, Bruce and Jocie continue to uphold the family tradition of quality and innovation. "Bruce and I grew up with this company – it’s in our blood," Jocie said. "Wash+Dry is a big part of that legacy, taking what our grandfather and dad built and making it even more relevant for today’s homes."
Throughout the decades, the Wash+Dry journey has been filled with meaningful coincidences and unexpected opportunities. Bruce reflected on how history seems to find ways of repeating itself. "If you really want to hear the crazy stories, you have to talk to our dad," he said with a laugh. “There are these moments where things come full circle. Partnerships formed through chance encounters, eureka moments developing a new product or design, or finding new applications that we never dreamed of, like washable mats for the home.”
As Wash+Dry (Kleen-Tex) approaches its 60th anniversary, it continues to expand its reach while staying true to its origins. Every decision, every innovation, and every unexpected turn has played a role in weaving Wash+Dry into what it is today. Shop Wash+Dry rugs for your home.
